The Mill Valley Film Festival – a Marin County avenue to meaningful, well directed independent films – turns 30 this year. Seeing “Starting out in the evening“, started out as a compromise between friends and a tight dinner-and-a-movie schedule. Little into the film though, I noticed Lauren Lambrose make an amazing appearance and it took me a while to recognize her from Six Feet Under. Frank Langella was perfect. The film tells the story of an aged, forgotten writer and a graduate student obstinate in unburying what was left of him. It also portraits the love of an interracial couple and their struggle to compromise. Touching, moving, real, deep, simple, human. This is a film I’m unlikely to forget, though I can’t seem to remember the title.
